Ducati, with its
background in road and racetrack performance, was an unlikely company to bring
a new level of sophistication and versatility to dual-purpose motorcycling. But
that is what happened when the Multistrada 1200S arrived in 2009.
With its
ability to change character at the press of a button - from 150bhp charger to
softly tuned off-road explorer - the Multistrada S proved that one bike could
be everything from firmly suspended sports machine to softly tuned explorer.
Even without the high-tech electronics the 1200S would have been outstanding. The previous Multistrada was an ungainly looking bike with a simple 992cc air-cooled V-twin engine. Its more stylish replacement was powered by a 15()bhp, dohc, liquid-cooled motor developed from that of the super-sports 1198.
Its flexible power delivery, upright riding position, reasonable wind protection, broad seat and generous fuel range made it a practical and comfortable roadster, and a capable if not very rugged off-roader.
Multistrada means 'many roads’ and the S model, in particular,
lived up to its name. Its rider could choose instantly between Sport. Touring,
Urban and Enduro modes.
This transformed the bike, for example cutting maximum
power from 150 to lOObhp and softening delivery for town or off-road riding,
softening the suspension and fine- tuning the level of traction control.
The
result was unmatched versatility, especially in the 1200S Touring option with
its panniers and heated grips.
Above: The Ducati had superb roadgoing handling for a ‘dual-purpose ’ model, once its rider had firmed up its suspension by selecting Sport mode. The 150bhp V-twin motor meant the Multistrada was very fast too, despite its wide bars and upright riding position.
Right: The Multistrada was tall by Ducati standards but its sharp styling and front mudguard beak gave an aggressive look. This is the 1200S Touring version, which came with panniers and heated grips. The Sport model included carbon- fibre accessories instead.
